You know how Google sometimes “predicts” what you might be searching for by giving you a little drop down menu of suggested search queries? These suggestions, of course, are based on what other users frequently search. So I tried teasing out some gender differences. Look at the pictures below.

This shows Google’s remarkable power as a source of data on a range of human behaviors, emotions, and opinions. It gives us insights into what people might care the most about concerning a given topic. When people search a particular political leader, what are their main concerns? What are people secretly guilty about? For better or for worse, Google’s obsession with collecting and refining data has given us a window into each other’s fascinating and telling curiosities.

This is a great idea Dan: a really clever use of a product for research purposes.
I should also add that, being a man, I find the comparison of the top suggestion in each case to be a rather depressing indictment of my kind

has google actually said that this is a list of common queries? people assume that, but it sometimes comes up with suggestions that are clearly not common search queries. you have no idea what this data actually is or how it has been filtered. hence this is an amusing hack but a terrible research tool.
there is a temptation for people to believe they can tap into the power of the oracle with hacks like this. it looks like a numerologists pretending to be mathematicians.

Renee, never place “give head” and “bite” in the same sentence please.

Hi Dan,
I just started reading your book, and absolutely love it. I have 2 questions for you.
1. Since traditional economics is about as accurate as the idea that the outdated idea that the sun revolves around the earth, what do you think it means for our economic future? If “experts” have no idea how economics actually works, do you think they can create economic policy that works?
2. Did you read the book Drunkard’s Walk? I absolutely loved it and wonder if you enjoyed it.
Thanks for great book!

More about Google Suggest (from Google themselves…)
As you type, Google Suggest communicates with Google and comes back with the suggestions we show. If you’re signed in to your Google Account and have Web History enabled, suggestions are drawn from searches you’ve done, searches done by users all over the world, sites in our search index, and ads in our advertising network. If you’re not signed in to your Google Account, no history-based suggestions are displayed. Data you send to Google is protected by Google’s privacy policy.

You know, there’s far more complexity in these answers than you might think.
Men, on average, are more motivated by sex than women are. But there’s lots of individual variation, based on age, personal body chemistry, circumstances, and what have you.
Women get the notion that sexual encounters with the wrong person can be dangerous, even life threatening, drilled into them starting at age, oh, 5.
Given that, the conventional wisdom is that women don’t have a hard time getting men to have sex with them. So if you happen to be a woman who IS having a hard time getting a man to have sex with you, you’re likely to feel part of an out group, and unlikely to express it. Even when that expression is anonymous on the internet.
Contrariwise, dominant males are seen to have easy access to sex with lots of different females, including oral sex. So men will be less inhibited about expressing such feelings. So there’s at the very least a magnifying effect.
There are some similarites in the list “trust me” appears on both. “love me” and “be more [affectionate, romantic]” seem pretty similar to me. Honestly, “last longer in bed” and “give me head” seem pretty similar, too.
Many of these desires come from a social framework of “successful women get their men to X[propose, stop smoking, be more romantic, last longer in bed]” or “successful men get their women to do Y”. Which other people imitate. Human see, human do. Monkeys have nothing on us.

For those wondering about the accuracy of Google Suggest, we did a story on Search Engine Land about it recently. Google basically said that it’s aggregated based on popular searches, but also takes into account topical search spikes.
http://searchengineland.com/climategate-just-how-popular-is-it-according-to-google-31211
The Google AdWords Keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal)is fairly accurate as it is reflective of ad impressions (although less fun than Google Suggest). While the girlfriend/boyfriend queries don’t have enough volume for Google to show numbers, the tool does show that the top 5 queries beginning with “how do I get my boyfriend to…” are:
-kiss me
-love me
-love me again
-marry me
-propose
And the top 5 queries beginning with “how do I get my girlfriend to…” are:
-forgive me
-give me head
-lose weight
-love me again
-orgasm
So the suggest data is pretty accurate in this case. Individual experience may, of course, vary.

I also changed the word “girlfriend” with “wife” and “boyfriend” with “husband.” The women’s results were mostly the same as they were when they were just the girlfriend. The husbands, though, were quite different. They were less concerned about sex and more concerned with romance and emotional bonds. A lot of the results for “how do I get my wife…” were the same as “how do I get my husband….” If you don’t mind, I’d like all the married men to tell me why they think that is. It’s extremely interesting.

Ha, very creative use of the Google auto complete function. What else could this be used for? Try out other people, like wife, husband, brother, mother… its an entertaining little experiment.

Zenuwprikkelende week « Brenda a.k.a. Numphke

if you put them side by side, they pretty much line up horizontally as the answer to the question on the other side.
you want your bf to propose, give him head. want your gf to give you head, propose.
want your bf to love you again, loose weight. want your gf to loose weight, love her again
trust him/her and they will trust you in return
